North Carolina legislators in a special session this week overwhelmingly approved funds to help victims of recent disasters. House and Senate members backed distribution of state funds for victims of Hurricane Matthew which swept across eastern North Carolina and also those who lost homes and businesses in the recent wildfires in the western part of the state.
Outgoing Gov. Pat McCrory personally appeared before the Appropriation Committee which approved $200 million in funds to help communities with restoration of public services, housing, and infrastructure repairs. Some $66 million will be matched with federal funds totally almost $300 million. Legislators were told that another round of appropriations is expected in the early weeks of the regular session in 2017 but no estimate was given.
