NORTH CAROLINA’S TURN

Paul Fogleman,

Early voting for the 15 primary in North Carolina opens this week—Thursday. Early predictions: big wins for Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump in their presidential bids. But not everyone is happy in the General Assembly, especially among Republicans. Among GOP legislators, Sen. Ted Cruz has a strong following. This divide is keeping Gov. Pat McCrory, who has his own challenges, on the sidelines.

Raleigh Democrats have their issues with the Trump campaign. Nationally, tens of thousands of Democrats and unaffiliated voters have poured into the polls to support the Donald, ignoring the overtures from their own party or associates. State legislators have hundreds of Trump supporters—even thousands—in their districts. Don’t look for “Stop Trump” campaigns to gain much traction in Tarheelia. Observers are predicting the national election season and its tensions will mean a short session … a real short session over in about 10 weeks or by July 4. The national GOP convention in Cleveland is in mid July.
